Narrative

Arnolds Voldemars SPROGIS, his wife Marije and their son Arnis came to Australia in 1949. They travelled on the SS Goya, which left Naples on 19 July, 1949, and arrived in Sydney on 18 August, 1949. They had been in various displaced persons camps in Germany for the previous four years. On arrival in Sydney, they were transferred by train to the Bathurst Reception and Training Centre.

Also mentioned in Arnolds' DP file are Stanislaus and Anna OLSEVSKIS (who appear to be his wife Marije's mother and stepfather and who arrived in Sydney on the Dundalk Bay in June, 1950), Marije and Alberts SPROGIS (who appear to be Arnolds' mother and brother), and also Zelma MATISS nee SPROGIS and her two children Aivars and Mare, (who appear to be Arnolds' sister, nephew and niece). Alberts and his mother Marije went to New York on the MSTS "General R M Blatchford", arriving from Bremerhaven on 4 April, 1950, en route to Kenoza Lake, Sullivan County, New York State. Zelma and her children also went to the United States but no record has so far been found of their arrival, although various death and marriage records have been found.
