“AN ABORIGINAL WOMAN”, Charlotte

Birth Name “AN ABORIGINAL WOMAN”, Charlotte
Gender female
Age at Death about 48 years, 3 months, 25 days

Narrative

From the Baptismal Certificate of Mary Ann BUGG. Information supplied by Barry SINCLAIR indicates James BUGG had
relationships with two women - firstly Elizabeth, and then Charlotte. His appears to be the only such reference.

Narrative

Mystery surrounds the origins of Charlotte: John Ramsland makes reference to her as a Kamilaroi woman in his book "The Rainbow Beach Man: The Life and Times of Les Ridgeway, Worimi Elder"; according to him she was living at Kirripit (now Rawdon Vale) near Gloucester; he believes she had made her way there to escape the indiscriminate massacres of blacks by white pastoralists in her native area. Uncle Les Ridgeway himself, in the same book, refers to her as a Worimi woman (although Ramsland claimed in an e-mail to me that Uncle Les later became convinced she was a Kamilaroi woman and stated this to Ramsland some days before his (Uncle Les') death at BONNY HILLS NSW in November 2014). Terry Smyth in his book "Denny Day" claims Charlotte was a "Gringai woman of the Wonnarua Nation". In her thesis "The Captain's Lady: Mary Ann Bugg" for her degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours (Aboriginal Studies) at the University of Tasmania, Kali Bierens states Charlotte was a Worimi woman, although Ms Bierens appears to have based this on the claims of Uncle Les Ridgeway. There are no doubt many other researchers and historians with other claims as to Charlotte's origins and we will now never know with certainty either her origins nor her Aboriginal kin.
