10 January 2000
At 7:30 a.m. we were having a
cup of tea and deciding what to do on a rainy day; finally
decided to go to the bowling club for lunch and, when the rain
cleared away about 2 o'clock, to go to the beach. It was lovely:
warm sun, gentle onshore breeze and rolling surf - also plenty of
white pointers. I went in for a swim. The water was beautiful and
the waves large, but without much power.
Later in the afternoon went and took some photographs of Father
Casey's garden. A lot of work has been done on it since we were
last here a couple of years ago and it looks like it is now
nearing completion. There was a front page spread on it in the
local paper and he has published a booklet explaining what the
various statues are and what the inscriptions mean. Have just
come back from there a little while ago after taking more
photographs tonight of the spot-lighted Celtic (or Coptic) cross
he made and which he has erected in the driveway of the
church.
Hope to go into Port tomorrow to pickup a couple of blanks for
the dashboard of the ute that the local Mazda dealer is getting
in for me and then away probably Wednesday, or Thursday at the
latest - next stop Uralla to visit great-great-great-great (I
forget how many) uncle Fred's (Ward - Captain Thunderbolt's)
grave in Uralla cemetery. Not too sure where from there, but nor'
west in the direction of Bourke and then over the border to
Thargomindah (don't know what's there, just like the name).
