Birth Name GANNON, William

Narrative

Michael, William and Margaret GANNON arrived in Sydney on the North Briton on 14 December 1839 (departed Dublin August 12 1839, Master: ADAMS). The passenger list gives their ages as 30, 23 and 24 respectively. All were from County Kildare and all were Roman Catholic, Michael's and William's calling was shown as "Ploughman", and Margaret's as "House Servant". Michael and William were to be engaged for a year by a Mr Humphrey of Sydney for a wage of £25/0/0 and rations; Margaret was to be engaged by a Mrs Ashton of Sussex Street, also for a year, for a wage of £14/0/0 and rations. Also according to their immigration records, Michael could read and write, but William and Margaret could do neither.

Narrative

There is some confusion about the parents' names of Michael, William and Margaret GANNON:
1. Michael's immigration record states: "A Native of Co Kildare, Parish of Newbridge, son of William, a Labourer and Ellen his wife"
2. William's immigration record states: "A Native of Co Kildare, son of William, a farmer and Mary his wife". Also, the record of William's marriage to Anne (Hannah) MADDEN (m 20 February 1855 at St Patrick's Church KILMORE Vic) shows William's parents as William GANNON and Mary O'ROURKE, whereas William's death record (NSW BDM 6380/1894) shows his parents as William GANNON, a Farmer, and Mary GULL - although the informant, a John Flannagan of Rookwood, GUNBAR, is no relation and his information may therefore be suspect
3. Margaret's immigration record states: "A Native of Co Kildare, daughter of William, a Miller, and Ellen WHELAN his wife"
So perhaps Michael and Margaret were brother and sister and William a cousin, although a number of researchers on Rootsweb have them all listed as siblings
