Narrative
The Stuckeys have been in the Narellan/Camden area of NSW since at least the mid-1860s. Cecil C STUCKEY, whose birth was registered in the name of Josiah Cecil Clarence STUCKEY, married Elizabeth Johanna GOLDEN at North Balmain in 1922. They were both said to have been involved with the "Gledswood" historic homestead at Narellan when it was a nursing home. Some claim that Cecil STUCKEY was a doctor and that Elizabeth GOLDEN a matron and that they owned Gledswood and ran it as a nursing home. The historic Gledswood homestead at Narellan was, as far as I can ascertain, never owned by the Stuckeys; It is also not certain that Cecil STUCKEY was a doctor; however Elizabeth STUCKEY, nee GOLDEN, was a registered midwife (trained at St Margaret's Hospital, Sydney) for the years 1931 to 1945, and again from 1951 to 1953. Her profession in the electoral rolls for the relevant years was shown as "Nurse" or "Matron". Enquiries with the Camden Historical Society and others finds no evidence that Gledswood was ever used as a nursing home. According to his obituary in the Camden News of 29 June 1922, Josiah Cecil Clarence STUCKEY had been living at Gledswood since boyhood and after leaving school was employed there as a gardener; he died there after a long illness. His father Josiah (Jess) STUCKEY was also employed at Gledswood, having worked and lived there for around 45 years until his retirement, when he moved to his private residence in Argyle Street, Camden. STUCKEY (Snr) seems to have been a person of some authority at Gledswood, his name regularly appearing in advertisements for the purchase and sale of stock, and also for receiving tenders for the lease of surplus land, and other matters.
