John F ROSE aged 30, his wife Ann (nee NEWMAN) aged 31, and their children John aged 7, Mary Ann aged 4, Elizabeth aged 3 and William James (born at sea in February 1838) arrived in Sydney from London on the Orontes on 18 May 1838. With them was John's brother Frederick. The ship had left London on 3 December 1837 (Master: SHORT, Surgeon-Superintendant: Dr BROCK, RN), calling at Madeira on 1 January 1838 and Cape of Good Hope on 17 March. She carried 212 emigrants. John F ROSE's Native Place was shown in the passenger list as "London" and his Trade or Calling as "Blacksmith". The list further states he was engaged by a Mr DAVIDSON of George Street SYDNEY and was to be paid wages of six shillings per day, without rations.

Another document relating to the arrival of John Fuller ROSE in the colony also states he arrived on the Orontes, that he was brought out by the government, that he was from Shadwell the son of Elizabeth and John ROSE of Tam (?) Parish London, that his calling was "Brazier & Smith" and that his age on embarkation was 30 (at 22 Oct 1808).
